Comparative Reading Passages
Overview
Comparative reading passages present two shorter passages (Passage A and Passage B) by different authors on a related topic. Questions test your ability to identify how the authors' views relate — agreement, disagreement, qualification, or elaboration.
1.Read Passage A fully first — note its main claim and the author's position
2.Read Passage B and actively compare: where does this author agree, disagree, or extend?
3.Map relationship types: full agreement, partial agreement, direct opposition, or qualification
4.Track which specific claims each author would endorse or reject from the other passage
5.For "both authors would agree" questions, find the overlap in their positions
6.For "point of disagreement" questions, find where they take opposite stances on a specific issue
Passage A argues that judicial precedent ensures legal stability and predictability. Passage B argues that rigid adherence to precedent can perpetuate unjust rulings and prevent legal evolution.
The authors would most likely agree on which of the following?
Answer B:
Both authors implicitly acknowledge that precedent has force in the legal system — they disagree about whether that force is net positive. The common ground is that precedent influences judicial outcomes, not whether it should be strictly followed.
✗Reading both passages simultaneously instead of A first
✗Confusing one author's views with the other
✗Picking "disagree" answers when authors simply discuss different aspects
✗Overlooking subtle qualifications in each author's position
